Paid Advertising On Social Media Sites Getting Started
1. Set Goals and Budget – My Biggest tip on using paid advertising on social media sites is to first set a goal. You have to be very clear on what you want to get out of your paid advertising on social media sites. If not the social networks will happily take your money. They will give you some nice vanity metrics too like “Reach”, “Shares”, “Likes”. But those metrics are probably NOT your goal of using paid social media advertising. A good goal would be to get a lead or a sale. So why not make that your goal? Also make sure to set your budget ahead of time. This is a big one because if your paid advertising on social media sites campaign is not doing well you can quit too early. By having a budget you can grade yourself also to see how well you did.
2. Define your Audience – Facebook gives you an amazing amount of ways you can define your audience. Use audience insights on Facebook to find your perfect audience. Other Social media sites that offer paid advertising also have ways where you can define your audience (but none are as good as Facebook’s). Your offer must match the audience or it will do poorly (be very expensive to run). TIP: Put a Facebook Custom Audience Pixel on your website. Then use Facebook’s audience insights (for free) to tell you all about your website visitors. That will help you find your audience quickly.
3. Shape Your Message – Try different variations of your message. Test them against each other. When you do paid advertising on social media sites you can create many different ads. The social media company will show all your ads and start showing the one that is doing better more often. You have to test your ads with social media advertising. Start with different pictures first. Then try changing up the headline.
4. Optimize – When you are doing paid advertising on social media sites you have to know that your campaign will not do very well in the beginning. It is because you are guessing at everything. After you start collecting some data look at what is working and what is not working. Make adjustments. Change around the ads like I told you about in step #3. Change the audiences too. A good rule of thumb is this: For every 5-10 audiences you test you will find 2-3 good ones.
