When most people get started with Social Media the first thing they do is go open an account on a bunch of different social media platforms like:
Facebook
Twitter
Pintrest
Instagram
Google+
Linked-In
Vine
Tumblr
the list goes on and on…
So what’s the problem with this strategy?
Well for starters you very quickly become completely overwhelmed with trying to stay up to date on all these platforms. I mean how can you possibly keep up?
To make matters worse it usually takes a pretty good time investment to start seeing results from any one platform. To see results with Twitter you need to spend time learning Twitter and interacting with people. The same is true with Pintrest and Instagram. You just don’t have enough energy and hours in the day to do this for all the different platforms.
What is the most common outcome from this strategy?
You will just give up and quit. You will not only feel overwhelmed but after a few weeks of doing all this work you still won’t be seeing any results. No clicks to your site. No new clients. Nothing to show for all your hard work. You just won’t see any results from any of the social media platforms. It is because you are spread too thin.
How do you fix this?
Quite Easily. Just focus your efforts. Only move on to another social media platform after you have mastered the first one.
Where to Start
Start with largest social networks and work your way down the list. This only makes sense because you will be reaching the most people and leveraging your time and resources in the best way. Here are the top 5 social media networks ranked by number of daily users:
Facebook
Twitter
Instagram
Google+
Linkedin
So start with Facebook. After you have Facebook under control move to Twitter. After you feel comfortable with Twitter move on to Instagram. I think you get the idea.
It may take several months just to get comfortable with (and see good results) with one platform. That is OK and normal. But then you can take the experience (and your new audience) to help you with the next social media platform. So things will get faster and easier for you. Just remember it is a lot harder in the beginning. That is why you need to focus.
Tip: Keep in mind Facebook will be a paid platform for you. You will only be able to get results if you are willing to pay money for ads. If you are not ready for this yet then you should start with Twitter. Twitter is the largest social network that you can get free website traffic and leads to grow your business.
You will get much better results this way.
Many people find that with just one or two social networks they are able to get plenty of results. They just don’t need to move on to the other ones. So keep things simple and focused. You will have much better success with your social media marketing efforts.
